The Opportunity
Enrollment and Onboarding is the front door to Hinge Health. Every member's care starts here: registering, answering the clinical questionnaire that determines eligibility and program fit, getting accepted, and then calibrating their first exercise therapy so day one feels made for them. The pod owns that whole path, on web and in our React Native app, for every program we offer, from chronic and acute musculoskeletal (MSK) pain to pelvic health and migraine.
This stretch is where members decide whether Hinge Health is for them. Small improvements in how quickly and confidently someone gets from sign-up to their first session compound into large gains in how many people actually start care.
As the Staff Software Engineer on this pod, you'll be the technical lead for a team of six engineers, working full-stack across NestJS services, a GraphQL backend-for-frontend (BFF), React web, and React Native. The system is a clinical intake pipeline and a server-driven mobile experience at the same time, and you'll set its architecture. Day to day you'll partner with Product, Design, Data Science, and User Research to turn what we learn about members into a better first week.
What You'll Accomplish
Own the enrollment and onboarding architecture: Set technical direction for the services and clients that take a member from registration through questionnaire, acceptance, and baseline calibration. Keep it coherent as programs, surfaces, and clinical rules multiply.
Build durable, observable member workflows: Design the multi-step, long-running orchestration behind enrollment on Temporal, with the idempotency, retry, and failure semantics a clinical intake flow demands.
Ship native, server-driven experiences: Lead the mobile and web experience for clinical questionnaires and calibration. Render data-driven survey and layout definitions in React Native and React so clinical and product teams can change content without an app release.
Turn intake signals into a personalized start: Connect what we learn about a member during enrollment to their first exercise therapy session, working with Data Science and partner teams so onboarding feels calibrated to the person.
Move the funnel: Instrument and experiment on the enrollment and onboarding funnel with Product, Design, and User Research. You'll be measured on accepted members who reach their first session.
Retire legacy safely: Lead migrations off legacy systems while they stay in production, and hold the line on quality, testing, observability, and protected health information (PHI) handling across the pod's repositories.
Lead through influence: Mentor the team's senior and mid-level engineers and raise the bar through design and code review. Represent the pod technically with partner teams across accounts, mobile platform, care, and data.
Who You Are
A full-stack owner: You've shipped and operated user-facing flows end to end, from React Native or React through the services behind them, and you're comfortable moving the boundary between client and server when the product needs it.
A systems thinker about state: You've built or run durable, multi-step workflows in production and you know what it takes to make them correct, from retries, idempotency, and versioning to what happens to the user when a step fails.
A builder across horizons: You're equally at home defining new architecture and hardening a legacy path that still serves real members.
A force multiplier: You raise everyone around you through mentorship, review, and standards that reduce friction.
A partner across disciplines: You work closely with Product, Design, Data Science, and User Research, and you can explain a technical tradeoff to a clinician as clearly as to an engineer.
Outcome-driven: You measure your work by what changed for members.
Basic Qualifications
5+ years of non-internship, full-time professional software engineering experience
Led the design and delivery of complex user-facing products end to end, across mobile or web clients and the backend services behind them
3+ years of TypeScript/JavaScript across the stack: Node.js (NestJS or similar) on the backend, React Native or React on the frontend
Production experience with durable workflow or long-running state orchestration (Temporal, Cadence, Step Functions, or a state machine you built and kept correct)
2+ years mentoring or leading other engineers and working with partners in product, design, and data
Preferred Qualifications
NestJS, GraphQL, PostgreSQL, Kafka, and Temporal in production
Server-driven UI or configuration-driven presentation layers on mobile: dynamic forms, survey engines, conditional logic defined in data rather than code
Signup, onboarding, intake, or application flows where completion rate was your metric
Migrated or decomposed a legacy system while it remained in production
Experimentation on critical-path product surfaces: A/B tests, feature flags, funnel instrumentation
Healthcare or another regulated, data-sensitive domain, including PHI constraints on logging and storage
Track record as a Staff-level individual contributor who shapes direction without direct reports
